Shopify Custom Theme vs App — Which is Better?

When to bend the theme, when to add an app, and when to stop and simplify.

If the change is visual or structural and lives in the storefront, the theme is usually the right home. You keep ownership, fewer subscription fees, and clearer performance profiling.

Reach for an app when you need ongoing service logic: subscriptions, complex discounts, or integrations that would be fragile inside Liquid alone.

Watch app load: each one can inject scripts globally. Two “small” apps can erase a week of speed work.

Hybrid is normal: a tight theme plus one well-chosen app beats five apps patching the same problem.

Before buying, ask: does this app export my data cleanly if I leave? If the answer is fuzzy, sleep on it.
